Japan Meteorological Agency issues Level 4 warnings for flood and landslide risks

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued Level 4 warnings for Tokushima Prefecture as Typhoon No. 6 intensifies rainfall across the Shikoku and Tokai regions. The alerts, released at 00:57 on 3 June 2026, designate a Level 4 Flood Warning for the Katsuragawa River within the Katsuragawa River system and a Level 4 Landslide Disaster Warning for southern Tokushima Prefecture. These represent the highest level of disaster prevention meteorological information under the agency’s 2026 systems.

Forecast models indicate that a line-shaped precipitation band is predicted to form in southern Tokushima, a weather phenomenon likely to exacerbate existing flood and landslide risks. The Japan Meteorological Agency has also issued warnings for Kochi Prefecture, though the specific warning levels for that region remain undefined in current reports. The typhoon is currently moving off the coast of Shikoku, bringing violent winds and heavy rain to the area.

The severe weather event follows a period of extreme heat in late May, where widespread areas experienced temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Typhoon No. 6 was previously forecast to approach Okinawa and the Amami Islands between 1 and 2 May, with impacts expected to extend from Kyushu to the Kanto and Chubu regions.

In response to the typhoon’s influence, commuter rail services in the Greater Tokyo Area have been suspended from the first trains on 3 June. This disruption affects multiple routes as operators prepare for the storm’s potential impact on the capital’s transport infrastructure.

Authorities are urging residents in the affected zones to take immediate precautions. The issuance of Level 4 warnings signals that a major disaster is imminent, requiring urgent evacuation and adherence to local disaster prevention protocols.
