Tochigi police link suspicious vehicle to dark job network in robbery-murder probe
Investigators believe the group utilised illicit part-time job platforms to organise the reconnaissance for the attack on a family in Kamigamo.

Police in Tochigi Prefecture have identified a suspicious vehicle spotted near the scene of a robbery-murder in Kamigamo eight days prior to the incident. Authorities believe the vehicle carried three individuals who were conducting surveillance on the victim’s residence under instructions from an anonymous, fluid criminal network.
According to NHK News Japan, the group is suspected of utilising 'dark' part-time job platforms, known as yami-baito, to recruit personnel for such activities. These platforms facilitate illicit work through anonymous online channels, a method increasingly associated with organised crime and fluid criminal structures.
The investigation centres on a violent incident involving a family of three in Kamigamo. While the direct link between the surveillance vehicle and the perpetrators of the robbery-murder remains an investigative hypothesis, police suspect the reconnaissance was orchestrated by the aforementioned network. The individuals in the vehicle are currently suspects in the surveillance phase and have not been charged in relation to the violent crime itself.
Previous reporting from 23 May 2026 indicated that a married couple arrested in connection with the case had attempted to evade capture by acting separately and planning to go into hiding. The discovery of the suspicious vehicle adds a new dimension to the probe, suggesting a premeditated element involving external surveillance.
The existence and structure of the 'anonymous, fluid criminal network' have not yet been publicly verified. Police caution that claims regarding the involvement of dark job platforms are based on suspicion and investigative theory rather than confirmed evidence. The exact identity and composition of the network remain unconfirmed as the investigation continues.
