Tinder expands group dating as alternative to one-on-one matches
The feature lets groups of three or more match around activities and plan meetups in a group chat. Tinder says it will first roll out in the US and selected markets.
Tinder is extending its double-date option with activity-based group hangouts, giving users a way to meet other groups rather than arrange a one-on-one date. The company says the feature will initially launch in the US and selected markets after tests in Australia.
Users create a group, choose an activity and invite friends. Once the group has at least three members, its profile can be shown to other groups. After a match, members can use a group chat to decide whether to meet.
The feature builds on Tinder’s double-date option, available since last year. Tinder says about 90 per cent of users who tried double dates were under 30, and those matches exchanged 35 per cent more messages. The company says the figures suggested younger users were looking for a lower-pressure way to meet people with friends’ support.
Tinder also says 40 per cent of invites were accepted during initial Australian tests. It did not provide sample sizes or methodology for these figures, and the supplied report does not confirm whether group hangouts are currently available in Australia.
The company has not given a launch date or named all the selected markets. Where available, the option appears at the top of the app’s home screen.
