Tigers hold roster together with 10-inning win over Cubs ahead of trade deadline

The Detroit Tigers secured an 8-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs in a 10-inning contest at Wrigley Field on Monday night, a result that underscores the franchise’s commitment to maintaining roster cohesion ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline on August 3. The win improved Detroit’s record to 12-4 in its last 16 games, a performance trajectory that aligns with the club’s stated objective of avoiding a bidding war for free agent pitcher Tarik Skubal.
Spencer Torkelson delivered the decisive blow with a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning, capping a three-run rally that sealed the victory. Dillon Dingler was instrumental throughout the contest, recording four hits including two solo home runs and an infield single that drove in Hao-Yu Lee. Dingler also contributed defensively by picking off Seiya Suzuki at second base for the final out of the fifth inning.
Chicago’s pitching staff struggled to contain Detroit’s offence, particularly in the early stages. Right-hander Jameson Taillon, making his first start since June 7 following a left hamstring strain, allowed four runs and five hits over 4 1/3 innings. The Tigers capitalised on Taillon’s rust, with Riley Greene hitting a three-run shot and Dingler adding a solo homer in the first inning.
The game was not without incident, as Chicago pitcher Trent Thornton was struck on the lower left leg by a batted ball in the 10th inning and was helped off the field. Detroit’s Kenley Jansen earned the win after striking out Alex Bregman for the final out of the ninth, leaving the bases loaded, while Tyler Holton recorded his first save of the season in the 10th.
For Chicago, Seiya Suzuki, Michael Busch, and Ian Happ each hit home runs, but the Cubs could not overcome the deficit. Gleyber Torres returned to the Detroit lineup after recovering from an oblique injury, recording two hits and two walks. The teams are scheduled to face off again on Tuesday night, with Framber Valdez starting for Detroit and David Peterson taking the mound for Chicago.
