Tigers’ Callahan makes historic debut as White Sox complete weekend sweep
Detroit’s early 3-0 lead evaporates in 7-5 loss, dropping them 5.5 games behind division leaders while the club remains in the AL Wild Card hunt.
Detroit Tigers rookie outfielder Brett Callahan delivered a historic start to his Major League Baseball career, tripling on the first pitch of his first at-bat against the Chicago White Sox. The 76-mph knuckle curve from White Sox pitcher Sean Burke resulted in a two-run triple, providing an early 3-0 lead for the Tigers at Comerica Park.
Callahan became only the third MLB player since 1988 to achieve this specific feat. He also marked the first time a Tigers player had tripled in his first at-bat since Bill Irwin accomplished the same on 18 May 1912. Irwin, an emergency player called up after a strike protesting Ty Cobb’s suspension, went 2-for-3 in his single MLB appearance.
Ranked as the organisation’s No. 19 prospect, Callahan was a surprise call-up from Triple-A Toledo. The 2023 No. 380-overall draft pick began the 2025 season in the Florida Coast League for rookies before spending the majority of the year at A-ball. He accumulated .274 batting average, 30 home runs, and 158 RBI across 911 minor-league at-bats.
Despite the individual milestone, the Tigers’ momentum stalled. The White Sox swept the three-game series by hitting seven home runs, ultimately defeating Detroit 7-5. Callahan finished his debut 1-for-2 with a strikeout, and Tigers manager A.J. Hinch elected to pinch-hit for him in the sixth inning.
The loss shifted the AL Central standings, with Detroit dropping 5.5 games behind the division-leading White Sox. However, the Tigers (60-64) remained one game behind in the AL Wild Card chase. Callahan was the fifth Tigers rookie to reach base on their first at-bat this season, a statistic not seen since 1963.
