The Oklahoma City Thunder are strategically inclined to see the Minnesota Timberwolves advance to the Western Conference finals over the San Antonio Spurs, despite the Spurs holding a 3-2 series lead. With Game 6 scheduled for Friday in Minneapolis, the Thunder view a potential matchup against Minnesota as offering a more favourable path to the conference finals, driven by concerns over defensive matchups and recovery time.
Analysts point to the significant rest advantage Oklahoma City currently holds. The Thunder have played only eight postseason games, the fewest of any team still in contention, with their last appearance on May 11. In contrast, the Spurs have played 10 games and the Timberwolves 11. If the Timberwolves were to force a decisive Game 7, they would face the Thunder with only two days of rest, whereas Oklahoma City would benefit from eight days of recovery.
The physical condition of both potential opponents further influences this preference. The Thunder are dealing with the absence of Jalen Williams, who has not played since April 22 due to a hamstring strain. Conversely, the Timberwolves are navigating a significant injury crisis, with Donte DiVincenzo sidelined by an Achilles tear and key players Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu playing through knee and calf issues, respectively. The Spurs, however, have no significant injury concerns.
Defensively, the Thunder face a distinct challenge from Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs’ centre has averaged 20.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 4.2 blocks in nine postseason games, posting a plus-19.4 net rating in 260 minutes on the floor. His presence disrupts interior scoring, forcing opponents to rely more heavily on three-point shooting. This is problematic for Oklahoma City, which ranks first in points per possession at the rim but can be streaky from beyond the arc.
Historical context also weighs in the Thunder’s favour regarding Minnesota. Oklahoma City swept the Timberwolves in five games during the 2025 Western Conference finals, winning by margins of 26, 15, two, and 30 points. While the Wolves are currently weakened by injuries and roster changes, the Spurs have shown greater regular-season success against Oklahoma City, going 4-1 this season, including three victories by double digits.
