Thunder dominate Lakers in Game 1 of Western Conference semifinals

The Oklahoma City Thunder routed the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90 on Tuesday night to take a decisive first-leg advantage in their Western Conference semifinal series. The victory marks the fifth consecutive win for the Thunder in the postseason, a run maintained despite the absence of All-Star Jalen Williams, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Oklahoma City's offensive efficiency was the primary driver of the result, with the team shooting 49.4 per cent from the field and connecting on 13 of 30 three-point attempts. This performance stood in stark contrast to the Lakers, who were held to a poor 41.7 per cent shooting percentage and committed 17 turnovers throughout the contest.

Chet Holmgren led the Thunder with a double-double, recording 24 points and 12 rebounds. He was supported by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Ajay Mitchell, who each contributed 18 points. Mitchell, who started in place of the injured Williams, played a pivotal role in extending the lead during the third quarter after being fouled in the final minute.

For the Lakers, the lack of their scoring champion proved insurmountable. Luka Dončić has been sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury, leaving the team to struggle offensively. LeBron James managed 27 points and Rui Hachimura added 18, but Austin Reaves was held to just eight points on 3-for-16 shooting.

The contest featured a notable injury to Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt, who exited in the first quarter after injuring his pinkie finger. Despite this early blow, the Lakers briefly ran out to a 7-0 lead before the Thunder responded with a 31-26 score at the end of the first quarter, capitalising on their eight-day break from the regular season.

The Thunder maintained control throughout the second half, with Holmgren's alley-oop dunk from Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso's fast-break dunk in the fourth quarter sealing the outcome. Oklahoma City will host Game 2 on Thursday at the Paycom Center.
