Three injured in Winterthur station stabbing as police investigate motive
Hospitalisation of three victims and cordoned-off areas mark ongoing inquiry into attack at Winterthur train station

Swiss police have arrested a 31-year-old man following a stabbing incident at Winterthur train station that left three people injured. The suspect, a Swiss national, is being held while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.
The three victims, identified as Swiss nationals aged 28, 43, and 52, were hospitalised after being attacked with a bladed weapon. Police have not yet released details regarding the severity of their injuries or their current condition, stating only that they received medical attention at local facilities.
Areas surrounding the station have been cordoned off as part of the ongoing investigation. Photographs published by Swiss news outlets depict the restricted zones, indicating the scale of the police response and the efforts to secure the scene while forensic teams work.
Eyewitnesses have provided accounts of the events leading up to the violence. An office worker near the station reported hearing a man shout "Allahu Akbar" at approximately 08:30 local time before the attack began. This phrase, meaning "God is greatest" in Arabic, was cited by the witness as occurring immediately prior to the use of a knife.
Another account, provided by a taxi driver to the Zurich-based daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung, described the suspect walking through the station’s underpass and attacking people. The report highlights the chaotic nature of the incident as it unfolded in a public transit space.
During the attack, a school teacher was observed shielding a group of schoolchildren who were passing through the area. This intervention was noted by local media as a key moment in the unfolding crisis, preventing further potential harm to the minors present.
Police have confirmed that the motive for the stabbing remains under investigation. While the shout reported by witnesses has been noted, authorities have not established a direct link between the phrase and the suspect’s intent, emphasizing that the inquiry into the underlying reasons for the attack is still in its early stages.
