Peter Thiel’s investment fund, Thiel Macro, has made Amazon its largest portfolio holding after reportedly buying 495,000 shares in the technology company.

The Motley Fool, in an article carried by Yahoo Finance, said Thiel Macro deployed more than US$418 million across eight stocks during the most recent three-month period. The fund had held no stock investments for two consecutive quarters.

Amazon now represents 28 per cent of the portfolio, according to the report, making it the fund’s largest position and its biggest purchase during the period. The source did not identify all eight stocks or provide the underlying filing and reporting period.

Amazon operates across e-commerce and cloud computing and develops, uses and sells artificial-intelligence technology. The company has also reported triple-digit growth in its chips business and AI revenue run rates, each exceeding US$25 billion, according to the source.

The other reported purchases included energy companies. The Motley Fool suggested some may be linked to demand for power to support AI infrastructure, but the supplied material does not state Thiel’s rationale for buying Amazon shares.

Thiel co-founded Palantir Technologies and PayPal and was an early outside investor in Facebook, now Meta Platforms.
