The Schiaparelli Suit: How Dua Lipa’s Wedding Look Revived a 1971 Fashion Rebellion
Fifty-five years after Bianca Jagger shocked the world in Yves Saint Laurent, Dua Lipa’s civil ceremony attire signals a decisive shift in bridal aesthetics, driven by a demand for non-traditional separates and personal authenticity.
Pop star Dua Lipa married actor Callum Turner in a civil ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London on Sunday, marking a significant moment in contemporary bridal fashion. Lipa wore an ivory skirt suit designed by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli, a deliberate homage to the iconic ensemble worn by Bianca Jagger when she married Mick Jagger in 1971. The look has reignited interest in non-traditional bridal wear, challenging the long-standing dominance of the floor-length lace dress that characterised the 1970s.
The Schiaparelli ensemble featured a blazer with surrealist buttons, including an evil eye and a lion’s head, paired with a blush-coloured corset and hip padding integrated into the jacket to create a sculpted silhouette. British milliner Stephen Jones designed the accompanying hat, which featured a gold underbrim reportedly intended to add a glow to the wearer’s face. Lipa accessorised the look with white gloves and a six-figure Bulgari Serpenti necklace, a piece she had previously worn to the Brit Awards.
Jagger’s original 1971 choice of a Yves Saint Laurent skirt suit was considered scandalous at the time, particularly because she wore the “Le Smoking” jacket with nothing underneath and a bias-cut skirt to conceal a secret pregnancy. While initially snubbed by clients for being too risqué, the look has since become a recurring reference in high fashion. Amal Clooney referenced the style in 2014, Emily Ratajkowski did so in 2018, and Zendaya’s stylist cited it as an influence for her 2025 Met Gala outfit.
Industry experts suggest that the appeal of the bridal suit lies in its nonconformist attitude and versatility. Stylist Rosie Boydell-Wiles noted that separates allow brides to express different facets of their personality, a feature particularly appealing for those hosting multiple wedding events. Henrietta Rix, co-founder of the fashion brand Rixo, confirmed a recent rise in brides searching for separate pieces, with her brand selling a skirt and long-sleeved top that alludes to the Jagger-inspired aesthetic.
The civil ceremony was followed by a rumoured three-day celebration in Palermo, Sicily. Boydell-Wiles observed that Lipa’s choice helps cement her identity beyond her onstage persona, allowing for a more authentic expression of self. As the trend gains momentum, Lipa’s appearance has secured her a place in bridal fashion history, ushering in a new era where separates and tailored suits are increasingly favoured over traditional gowns.
