The Athletic names three former Oregon Ducks as 2026 NFL breakout candidates
The sports publication has identified three former University of Oregon standouts as potential breakout stars for the upcoming NFL season, citing improved roles and late-season momentum.
The Athletic has identified three former University of Oregon Ducks players as breakout candidates for the 2026 NFL season: Los Angeles Rams tight end Terrance Ferguson, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, and Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Brandon Dorlus. The selection forms part of the publication’s annual methodology of tabbing one breakout candidate from each of the 32 NFL teams.
Ferguson, selected in the second round in 2025, is expected to serve as a strong third receiving target behind Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. This shift marks a significant change from his rookie season under head coach Sean McVay, where he saw lightly used playing time. McVay is known for rarely relying on rookies to contribute immediately due to the complexity of his offensive system, but Ferguson’s elite athleticism and versatility to split out wide are projected to yield increased usage in 2026.
Harmon, a first-round pick, is expected to work with new outside linebackers coach C.J. Ah You to improve his pass-rush repertoire. The Steelers plan to have Harmon spend time in training camp adding moves to his defensive tackle skillset, aiming to build on his three-sack rookie season. The Athletic noted that Harmon’s presence significantly impacted the defence, with the Steelers allowing an average of 90 rushing yards in games he played compared to 166 in games he missed due to injury.
Brandon Dorlus, a fourth-round pick in 2024, showed marked improvement in his second season with six sacks and 22 quarterback pressures in his final eight games. This late-season surge contrasts with a slower start where he recorded only 1.5 sacks in his first seven games last year. The Falcons traded linemate Ruke Orhorhoro in the offseason, a move that may free Dorlus up to chase the quarterback more effectively.
The recognition highlights the continued presence of Oregon alumni in the league, with nearly 50 current pro Ducks players. Prominent figures include quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Bo Nix, running back Bucky Irving, defensive end DeForest Buckner, and Jevon Holland. While the predictions regarding breakout performances are speculative and depend on player health and tactical adaptation, Ferguson, Harmon, and Dorlus represent the next batch of former Oregon stars to potentially emerge.
