Texas A&M faces tough SEC gauntlet in bid for second straight playoff berth

USA TODAY has released its final record predictions for the 2026 Southeastern Conference season, forecasting that Texas A&M will finish with a 9-3 overall record and 6-3 in conference play. The projection places the Aggies tied for fifth in the SEC, behind Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Alabama, according to writers Paul Myerberg and Ramon Padilla.

The prediction underscores the structural challenges facing the program as it attempts to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff for a second consecutive season. Following a successful second year under head coach Mike Elko, which concluded with an 11-2 record and a playoff appearance, the team now navigates a new nine-game conference schedule that is expected to result in more than half the league finishing with records of 9-3 or 8-4.

Roster continuity remains a significant variable in this equation. The Aggies lost a total of 15 starters to the 2026 NFL Draft, a figure that aligned with Elko’s pre-season expectation that "10 to 12" players would be selected. Among those departing were first-round pick KC Concepcion and second-round pick Cashius Howell, whose departures have necessitated substantial changes on both sides of the ball.

To maintain a realistic path to the postseason, the team must remain undefeated at home and can afford to lose only two road games. This requirement places particular emphasis on the upcoming matchup against the Texas Longhorns, a contest Texas A&M has not won in over a decade. Success will also depend on the development of redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who has completed 16 preseason practices, and the integration of four new starters on the offensive line alongside a revamped defensive unit.
