Reader vote opens for seven Las Cruces-area Athlete of the Week nominees

The Las Cruces Sun-News has opened voting for performances recorded between 7 and 12 September, with the poll closing at noon on 18 September.

Reader voting has opened for the El Paso Children’s Hospital Athlete of the Week, with seven high-school athletes from Las Cruces, Centennial and Organ Mountain high schools nominated for performances during the 7–12 September period.

The nominees are Jarah Hawkins, Cynthia Riggs, Jaydon Kraft, Ruiz Laborin, Noah Dominguez, Isabella Carpio and Rodrigo Martinez. The winner will be decided through the Las Cruces Sun-News poll, which closes at noon on 18 September.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported that Hawkins recorded 11 kills and one block as Las Cruces High School girls volleyball swept Hobbs 25–18, 25–8, 25–16. Centennial’s Riggs recorded 12 kills and one ace in the Hawks’ 3–0 sweep over Silver Valley.

In football, Organ Mountain’s Kraft recorded one touchdown against Eldorado, while Centennial’s Laborin scored three touchdowns against Carlsbad in a 35–7 win.

The cross-country nominees are Organ Mountain’s Dominguez, who placed 13th at the Cathedral/Loretto XC Invitational in 17:50, and Centennial’s Carpio, who finished sixth in 21:01. Las Cruces boys soccer player Martinez was nominated after scoring two goals against Deming.

The previous winner was Las Cruces football player Denton Walter, who the Sun-News reported received 2,534 votes, or 98 per cent.
