His appointment marks the fifth consecutive year that Tennessee has installed a new starter at the position. Brandon, a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, enrolled at Tennessee in January following a 35-1 record as a starter at Grimsley High School, where he led the team to consecutive state championships.
Brandon’s selection is notable within the broader collegiate landscape, as he is the only true freshman to start at quarterback in Week 1 for a Power Four team. This decision places immediate pressure on the young player to establish stability for the Vols’ offensive unit from the outset.
On the opposing side, Furman will be led by graduate student quarterback Jake Garcia. Garcia made his first start for the Paladins in their recent season-opening victory over Division II Anderson.
