Tehran blocks US diplomatic overtures pending port restrictions
Iranian state media insists conditions are not ripe for face-to-face talks until the blockade of its ports is lifted, creating a structural barrier to the planned peace negotiations.

The prospect of a new round of peace negotiations between the United States and Iran has stalled as Tehran has ruled out face-to-face talks with American envoys. Iranian state media confirmed that representatives in the capital have no immediate plans to meet with US officials, citing that diplomatic conditions remain unripe.
According to reporting from Tehran by FRANCE 24 correspondent Reza Sayah, the Iranian government maintains that the lifting of the blockade on Iranian ports is a prerequisite for any meaningful diplomacy. This specific condition has effectively halted the momentum of recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
Tensions escalated as US envoys were expected to arrive in Islamabad on Saturday to kickstart these discussions. The planned delegation included high-profile figures such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were scheduled to engage in what the White House administration described as an in-person conversation with Iranian counterparts.
The timing of the visit coincided with the arrival of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the Pakistani capital. Pakistan is currently serving as the primary mediation venue for these talks, hosting both delegations despite the fundamental disagreement regarding the format of engagement.
A divergence in expectations now characterises the situation. While the US administration proceeded with the deployment of envoys to Islamabad, Iranian state media explicitly rejected the notion of direct negotiations. This creates a scenario where the physical presence of both parties does not necessarily translate into productive dialogue.
The ongoing conflict between the two nations has now entered its 57th day, and the current impasse highlights the depth of the disagreement. It remains unclear whether the US envoys will proceed with their planned visit to Islamabad given the explicit rejection of face-to-face talks by Tehran.
