Tavernier says Bournemouth can correct habit of surrendering leads
Bournemouth midfielder Marcus Tavernier says the team must improve its focus and game management after Newcastle recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.
Bournemouth’s early-season failure to protect leads has become a point of concern after Newcastle United fought back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw.
The result meant Bournemouth had reportedly dropped seven points from winning positions across its first three matches of the season and Marco Rose’s reign, according to a report from Yahoo Sports citing BBC Radio Solent.
Tavernier, who scored Bournemouth’s opening goal before being substituted late in the match, said the problem was capable of being corrected. He described the dressing room as “deflated” and said the side needed to improve its focus and control of games.
Bournemouth had been the better team for much of the contest, Tavernier said, but Newcastle took control in the second half. He said a defensive mistake allowed the hosts back into the match and that Bournemouth needed to learn from the setback.
Daniel Jebbison, who replaced Tavernier, attributed the lapses to a lack of focus on the small defensive responsibilities required during a match. He said the squad was frustrated but would work on the issue in training.
Jebbison added that the manager was disappointed but remained positive and expected high standards from the players.
