Swan claims England’s first Glasgow gold in powerlifting

England’s Mark Swan has secured the first gold medal for his nation at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, winning the men’s lightweight powerlifting event with a total lift of 222kg. The victory marks a significant milestone for the English contingent at the Glasgow Games, capping a strong performance in the up to 80kg category.

Swan, who previously claimed silver at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, entered the competition with momentum after setting a European record of 220kg in March at the European Open Championships. His successful lift of 222kg in Glasgow surpassed that previous benchmark, establishing a new standard for the event.

The podium was completed by Nigeria’s Roland Ezuruike, who took the silver medal, and Malaysia’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, who claimed bronze. Gustin, who holds the world record in this category, was unable to improve on his standing after failing to lift 230kg in his final attempt.

In a bid to push the boundaries of the sport, Swan attempted a lift of 232kg in his final round, a weight that would have equaled the existing world record. The attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Swan with the gold medal and the European record, but falling short of the global benchmark.
