Svilar denies Juventus links as Roma face Inter in top-of-table clash

Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar has denied holding transfer talks with Juventus during the summer window, asserting that the prospect of a title challenge is still premature. The 27-year-old, who was named Serie A’s best goalkeeper for the last two seasons, spoke to Corriere della Sera ahead of the club’s Round 5 match against Inter at the Stadio Olimpico.

Svilar explicitly stated that he never discussed a move to the Turin side over the summer. While acknowledging the strong start to the campaign, he advised the squad to remain balanced and stable, noting that Roma’s current approach differs significantly from the previous season, when the initial target was to finish third in the league.

The goalkeeper described Inter as the strongest team in the league and the side that has been at the top in recent years. He noted that facing the Nerazzurri in a potential Scudetto challenge “makes me smile,” while emphasising the need for the team to manage expectations carefully given the city’s tendency to swing between excitement and drama based on short-term results.

Both Roma and Inter are the only teams to have secured four wins in the opening four games of the current Serie A campaign. Svilar highlighted the psychological demands of his role, explaining that in a dominant team, goalkeepers often spend significant time alone with their thoughts. He revealed that he works with a mental coach on game days to manage negative thoughts and visualise scenarios, ensuring he is prepared for worst-case outcomes.

The upcoming fixture represents a critical test for Roma’s ambitions. Svilar’s comments suggest a shift in institutional strategy, moving away from the conservative targets of the previous season towards a more competitive stance, albeit with a degree of caution regarding the sustainability of their current form.
