Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old tutor and mechanical engineering graduate from Torrance, California, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington. The attack occurred at the annual media gala attended by President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration, an event that has now prompted a reshaping of security architecture at the venue.
Allen, who described himself as a "Friendly Federal Assassin" in a manifesto sent to his family prior to the incident, opposed President Trump's policies. While the written declaration did not directly name the president, it referred to him using severe derogatory terms. The document included an apology to non-targeted individuals and those whose trust he claimed to have abused, indicating a specific intent to target administration officials rather than the general public.
Despite his opposition to the current administration, Allen maintained a clean legal record with no prior criminal charges. Public records indicate he legally purchased a .38-calibre semiautomatic pistol in October 2023 and a 12-gauge shotgun in 2025. He was taken into custody by authorities at the scene of the attack after travelling from California to Washington DC by train via Chicago with the specific intent to attack officials present.

He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, obtained in 2017, and a master's degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills. A professor at the latter institution described Allen as a very good student who was soft-spoken, polite, and frequently emailed with coursework questions.
Professionally, Allen worked for six years at C2 Education, where he was listed as teacher of the month in 2024. His online profile also details his development of a prototype for an emergency brake for wheelchairs and a video game based on molecular chemistry for the Steam platform. Voter registration records show he contributed $25 to a Democratic Party political action committee supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and displayed a yard sign supporting a local Democratic-endorsed judge candidate.
President Trump has referred to the suspect as a "sick guy" and claimed that the suspect's family had raised concerns with local police prior to the event. Meanwhile, Allen's father, Thomas Allen, is listed as an elder at Grace United Reformed Church in Torrance, a congregation described as Bible-believing. The incident has left significant questions regarding the vetting of individuals with access to the nation's capital and the security protocols at high-profile political gatherings.
