SMCI Stock Soars as Super Micro Computer's Backlog Surpasses $60 Billion
AI server specialist posts record order intake and doubles gross margin guidance for the quarter

Super Micro Computer shares rose sharply on July 22, 2026, following a preliminary preview of its fourth-quarter earnings. The artificial intelligence server specialist reported receiving new orders worth more than $60 billion during the quarter and revised its gross margin guidance to 16%. This figure is nearly double the previous estimate of 8.3%, signalling a significant improvement in profitability despite revenue expectations remaining near the lower end of the previously guided range of $11 billion to $12.5 billion.

The surge in share price reflects strong enterprise demand for liquid-cooled clusters and AI hardware. According to analysts at Goldman Sachs, the expected pressure on the top line is likely attributable to a delay in a lower-margin deal, which has organically lifted gross profitability in the fourth quarter. Locking in such a substantial backlog improves forward earnings visibility and reinforces the company's core growth trajectory in high-density rack-scale solutions.

Needham analysts maintained a "Buy" rating on the stock and raised the price target to $46. Analyst Quinn Bolton cited the record-setting order intake and improving profitability as evidence that the firm continues to gain ground in the market. The upgrade suggests potential for a more than 45% rally from current levels, with the stock soaring past its 20-day moving average and challenging the 50-day moving average at the time of reporting.

Despite the sharp rally, the stock remains down approximately 35% from its high in June 2026. Data from Barchart indicates that while the consensus rating remains at "Hold," the mean price target of nearly $36 suggests potential upside of about 13% from current levels. Other Wall Street analysts also forecast significant upside in the stock from these levels, reflecting broader institutional interest in the sector.

The company's ability to secure such a large volume of new orders underscores the sustained appetite for AI infrastructure among enterprise clients. As the market digests the preliminary earnings data, investors are watching to see if the improved margin profile can sustain momentum as the company navigates the complex supply chain dynamics of the AI hardware market.
