Sunderland finalise Fofana deal after Palace bid war

Sunderland have completed the signing of Lyon winger Malick Fofana for a total fee of £30.8m, concluding a high-stakes transfer window finale that saw the player weigh up offers from two Premier League clubs. The deal, which comprises an initial payment of £25.7m plus £5.14m in add-ons, was finalised just before the deadline after a period of intense negotiation and player indecision.

The transfer was characterised by a direct bidding war with Crystal Palace, whose manager Pierre Sage had previously coached Fofana at Lyon. Although Sunderland had agreed initial terms with Lyon on the morning of Deadline Day, Palace moved to intervene by entering direct communication with the player in an attempt to secure his signature.

The situation escalated as both clubs reached agreements with the French side, leaving Fofana to make the final decision. According to Sky Sports, the winger waited at Lyon airport with two private jets available, one bound for Sunderland and the other for London, while undergoing a single medical accessible to both competing clubs.

Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus travelled to Lyon to persuade the player to join the Black Cats, a move that coincided with the collapse of parallel talks to sign Benfica winger Dodi Lukebakio. Lukebakio ultimately decided to remain in Portugal, shifting the focus entirely to the Fofana saga.

Arsenal were also reported to have considered a move for Fofana over the weekend but did not submit a formal bid, allowing Sunderland and Palace to dominate the negotiations. The player reportedly changed his mind multiple times throughout the day before giving Sunderland the green light just over an hour before the deadline expired.

The signing represents a significant investment in Sunderland’s squad, with the deal sheet submitted late in the evening and the transfer officially announced in the early hours of the following day.
