Boston Red Sox left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez is set to make his first career start against his former team, the Philadelphia Phillies, on Thursday. The game, scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET at Fenway Park, will see Suarez take the mound against Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo. Weather conditions in Boston are expected to be poor, with rain and wind blowing in, potentially impacting the series finale.
Suarez joined Boston on a five-year, $130 million contract after rejecting a qualifying offer from Philadelphia. The move resulted in draft pick compensation for both clubs, with Boston forfeiting its second- and fifth-highest selections in the July amateur draft and $1 million in international signing bonus allocation in 2027. Philadelphia received an extra pick after the fourth round of the 2026 draft as a result of the transaction.
The matchup carries personal weight for Suarez, who spent 13 years with the Phillies organization after being signed for $25,000 as a 16-year-old in Venezuela. He became a fan and clubhouse favorite, with a giant photo of him hugging catcher J.T. Realmuto after the 2022 NLCS still hanging in the Phillies' home clubhouse. Players reportedly FaceTimed him from the clubhouse just weeks ago, with Suarez telling his ex-teammates, "I love you guys. I miss you guys. See you soon."
Suarez has been effective for the Red Sox this season, recording a 2-2 record with a 2.77 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in seven starts. However, he has not pitched since May 3, when he left a game against Houston due to right hamstring tightness. He has been knocked around in his first two starts but has not allowed a run in four of five outings since, posting a 1.17 ERA over that stretch.
The opposing starter, Jesus Luzardo, has struggled significantly at home this season. Luzardo is 3-3 with a 5.98 ERA overall, but his home record stands at 1-3 with an 8.65 ERA, compared to a 2-0 record and 2.00 ERA in away games. The Phillies acquired Luzardo from the Marlins in December 2024, viewing him as an eventual replacement for Suarez, and later locked him to a nearly identical five-year, $135 million extension.
Phillies All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto acknowledged the difficulty of facing a former teammate, noting that he cannot overthink the matchup. "It's hard," Realmuto said. "You can't really overthink it and try to guess what he's going to do because he's probably not going to do what I think he might. So the last thing I want to do is go up there and try to think about what he's gonna throw me."
