Stokes recalled to England squad for series decider amid disciplinary fallout
England and Wales Cricket Board issues written warnings while independent regulator finds insufficient evidence of regulatory breach

England cricket captain Ben Stokes has been recalled to the national squad for the deciding third Test match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, following a disciplinary investigation into a nightclub incident. Stokes addressed the media for the first time since being dropped pending an inquiry, stating his full focus is on the upcoming series decider. He declined to provide assurances regarding his long-term future as captain or whether he considered retiring, asserting that his concentration remains solely on the immediate fixture.
The England team is currently level 1-1 in the three-match series after suffering a 253-run defeat in the second Test under interim captain Joe Root. Stokes acknowledged the difficulty of watching the match from afar and admitted to putting Root in a challenging position. He reportedly apologised to the team on Tuesday before resuming his captaincy duties, stating he needed to let the squad know he was back properly and that his focus was thoroughly on what the team needed to achieve this week.
Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were dropped after breaching a midnight team curfew set following England's poor performance in the Ashes series. The disciplinary issue stemmed from an incident at a London nightclub where an England security official was reportedly struck by a rugby player from Saracens. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) issued written warnings to Stokes and Atkinson for breaching specific contractual obligations.
Conversely, the independent Cricket Regulator concluded there was "insufficient evidence to establish that any regulatory breach occurred" regarding the alleged violent conduct. Stokes scored 95 runs for Durham in the County Championship while suspended, suggesting he found the distraction beneficial for his cricket form amidst scrutiny of his batting.
Regarding his relationship with head coach Brendon McCullum, Stokes asserted that their bond has not deteriorated. He noted that they spoke daily during the suspension and suggested the experience may have brought them closer, dismissing speculation that they had drifted apart since taking charge in 2022. Stokes refused to comment on the specific details of the nightclub incident or his long-term intentions, maintaining that his only concern is the series decider starting Thursday.
