Stokes’ all-round display sets up Durham’s commanding position over Derbyshire
The former England captain scored 53 and took two wickets on the second day, while Division One leaders Nottinghamshire and Somerset extended their respective leads.

Ben Stokes provided a significant all-round contribution for Durham as they established a 156-run lead over Derbyshire on the second day of their Rothesay County Championship Division Two fixture. The former England captain scored 53 from 61 balls, striking 11 fours, before being dismissed by Anuj Dal. His innings helped Durham post a total of 283, setting a challenging target for their opponents.
Stokes also made an immediate impact with the ball, taking two wickets with his first two deliveries of his spell. He removed Harry Came, who edged to Alex Lees at third slip, before dismissing Caleb Jewell with a yorker. Derbyshire closed on 127-6, leaving them trailing by 156 runs as the day concluded.
In Division One, leaders Nottinghamshire extended their advantage over Surrey by 169 runs. Olly Stone took 6-44 as Surrey were dismissed for 162. Nottinghamshire then closed on 147-3 after Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes shared a 70-run partnership, with both remaining unbeaten.
Somerset, who sit second in the division, also enjoyed a strong day against Essex. The hosts posted 469 all out, with James Rew contributing an unbeaten 74 and Migael Pretorius adding 48 in a 72-run stand. Jack Leach then took 4-37 as Essex were skittled for 158. Despite Essex following on and reaching 59-0, their deficit remained at 252 runs.
Other Division One action saw Warwickshire, currently in third place, dismiss Sussex for 156. Chris Woakes took 4-36 in the match. However, Warwickshire struggled with the bat, scoring just 161 before Tom Haines’ unbeaten 32 helped them close on 161-3.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Kent led Middlesex by 139 runs after closing on 38-2. Northamptonshire also held a lead over Lancashire, with George Bartlett scoring 92 to guide the hosts from 134-6 to 284. The second Test between England and Pakistan is scheduled to begin at Lord’s on Thursday.
