Steelers weigh trade options for Mason Rudolph amid roster constraints

Steelers analyst Andrew Vasquez of SteelersWire has identified the New York Jets as a potential trade partner for Rudolph. In an analysis published on Wednesday, Vasquez noted that the Jets have publicly stated they are "all in" on Geno Smith for the upcoming campaign. However, he argued that Rudolph would provide a cost-effective, top-tier backup option and a necessary insurance policy should Smith’s season be compromised.

The proposed trade structure reportedly involves the Steelers seeking a late-round pick swap in return. This valuation reflects Rudolph’s status as a veteran presence with significant experience, contrasting with the developmental trajectories of Allar and Howard. The Jets would gain a reliable plan B without committing significant cap space, aligning with their current roster strategy.

Alternatively, the Steelers may choose to retain Rudolph as the primary backup to Rodgers. In this scenario, the club would likely cut one of the younger quarterbacks, either Allar or Howard, to comply with roster limits. The final composition of the quarterback room remains undecided, with no official agreements reached between the parties involved.
