Steelers’ rookie QB Drew Allar delivers efficient debut in McCarthy era
Allar completes 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards and three touchdowns, while Will Howard adds to the offensive output in head coach’s debut.
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar exceeded expectations in his NFL debut, contributing to a 28-9 victory against the Green Bay Packers. The win marked the debut of head coach Mike McCarthy, with Allar playing the majority of the second half to help secure the result.
Allar completed 10 of 13 passes for 153 yards, achieving a passer rating of 154.8. In three series of work, he scored three touchdowns, including two passing scores and one rushing touchdown. The former Penn State standout demonstrated comfort in the offence, making quick decisions and capitalising on red zone opportunities.
The Steelers’ quarterback collective finished the game 27-for-33 for 313 yards and two touchdowns, with a team passer rating of 128.8. Allar credited his success to preparation during rookie OTAs and training camp, noting that facing a challenging scheme daily helped mentally prepare him for the NFL level.
Fellow rookie Will Howard also made his debut, completing 7 of 9 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. Howard entered the game after starter Mason Rudolph went 10 of 11 for 93 yards in two series. Howard led a successful two-minute drill late in the first half, culminating in a fourth-down completion to Ben Skowronek.
Allar’s performance included an 80-yard scoring drive ending in his rushing touchdown, sparked by a 74-yard gain by rookie Kaden Wetjen. He later led a 10-play, 89-yard drive where he completed all seven of his passes for 69 yards, ending with a five-yard touchdown pass to Wetjen.
Allar, who is entrenched in a position battle with Howard, described the performance as a confidence boost. He highlighted the concise game plan developed by McCarthy and the offensive staff, which allowed him to play fast and execute in positions where he was comfortable.
