This sentiment follows a period of uncertainty that extended past the NFL draft, contradicting earlier comments from general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike McCarthy who had suggested no deadline was being applied to the 42-year-old.
To secure its position, the Steelers applied the rarely used UFA tender to Rodgers late last month. This move offers the quarterback a 10 per cent salary increase to approximately $15 million for the upcoming campaign. Crucially, the tender grants the franchise exclusive negotiating rights with Rodgers until July 22 or the start of training camp, whichever date is later. This mechanism ensures the club remains eligible to secure a compensatory draft pick should Rodgers choose to sign with another organisation before the window closes.
Rodgers, who will turn 43 during the 2026 season, previously signed a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the club before their June 2025 minicamp. During that season, he acclimated seamlessly to the Pittsburgh system, finishing with a 10-6 record across 16 starts. His performance included completing 65.7 per cent of his pass attempts, throwing 24 touchdowns against seven interceptions, despite missing Week 12 due to a fractured wrist sustained against the Cincinnati Bengals.
A potential return to Pittsburgh would facilitate a reunion between Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy, who guided the quarterback for 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Under McCarthy's leadership in Green Bay, Rodgers won two NFL MVP awards and a Super Bowl championship. The prospect of working with his former coach again appears to be a significant factor in the ongoing discussions, even as the club manages the complexities of his age and injury history.
