Steelers add depth to secondary with signing of Brandon Hill
Pittsburgh secures the services of the former Pitt Panthers safety, who was released by the Chicago Bears earlier this month.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have moved to bolster their defensive backfield by signing strong safety Brandon Hill, according to a team announcement on Tuesday. The acquisition adds a veteran presence to the roster as the club continues to evaluate its depth ahead of the upcoming season.
Hill, 25, enters the league as a seventh-round selection from the 2023 NFL Draft, where he was originally chosen by the Houston Texans. Since his draft selection, the Florida native has navigated a path through multiple franchises, playing for the Las Vegas Raiders before joining the Chicago Bears.
The Bears released Hill on 11 August, clearing him for a new contract. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 195 pounds, Hill brings a physical profile to the Steelers' secondary. His movement from Houston to Las Vegas and then to Chicago reflects the competitive nature of roster construction in the league.
Hill’s professional career is underpinned by a solid collegiate foundation at the University of Pittsburgh. After redshirting in 2019 and becoming a regular contributor in 2020, he started in his final two seasons with the Panthers in 2021 and 2022.
During his time at Pitt, Hill recorded three interceptions and nine passes defended. His performance included a notable interception returned for a touchdown against Florida State in 2020, showcasing his ability to make plays in critical moments.
The signing represents a strategic addition for the Steelers, who are looking to integrate a player with recent NFL experience. Hill’s familiarity with the professional game, combined with his production at the collegiate level, provides the coaching staff with a versatile option for the defensive unit.
