Larson closes in on Hamlin as Gateway chaos reshapes NASCAR Chase

Kyle Larson’s victory at World Wide Technology Raceway, commonly known as Gateway, has substantially reduced the points gap between himself and Denny Hamlin in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings. The race at the 1.25-mile track near St. Louis was characterised by widespread incidents, with nearly all Chase drivers involved in at least one crash. Despite the chaos, only three drivers were able to cut into Hamlin’s margin during the event.

The result leaves Larson in a stronger position with eight races remaining in the season. The next event is scheduled for the Bristol Motor Speedway night race, where the competitive landscape may shift further. Larson’s win provides a crucial momentum boost as the series enters its final stretch, though the deficit to Hamlin remains a significant hurdle to overcome.

Other contenders faced mixed fortunes at St. Louis. Chris Buescher lost 23 points to Hamlin due to a brake failure, while William Byron finished fourth, maintaining his 114-point deficit without gaining or losing ground relative to the leader. Austin Cindric moved up to 12th in the standings after a 10th-place finish, but still failed to close the gap on Hamlin.

Joey Logano gained 21 points on Hamlin with a third-place finish, improving his standing to seventh. In contrast, Chase Elliott’s race was ended early by a brake rotor failure, and Ty Gibbs finished 18th. Carson Hocevar finished eighth, one spot ahead of Hamlin, while Ryan Preece and Daniel Suárez struggled with finishes of 17th and 29th respectively.

The upcoming Bristol night race presents a different challenge for the field. Historical performance data suggests that several drivers, including Buescher and Byron, have had limited success at the track in recent years. The event will also feature a tribute element, with Ty Gibbs set to drive a special car in honour of the late Kyle Busch.

As the series approaches the final eight races, the points battle remains tight. Larson’s ability to convert his Gateway victory into further gains will be critical, while Hamlin’s lead, though reduced, remains the benchmark for the rest of the field.
