State Track Finals Open at BYU with Defending Champions in Focus
The 6A and 5A divisions commenced their championship campaigns on Thursday, setting the stage for a decisive conclusion on Friday.
The opening day of the 6A and 5A Utah high school state track and field championships took place at Brigham Young University on Thursday, marking the beginning of the final phase of the state’s premier athletic competition. The event serves as the culmination of the season for the state’s largest divisions, with defending champions American Fork positioned to retain their titles in both the boys’ and girls’ 6A categories. In the 5A division, Viewmont and Timpview enter the meet as the reigning champions for the boys’ and girls’ teams, respectively.
Competition results from Thursday highlighted strong performances across several disciplines. In the 3,200 metres, Jackson Spencer of Herriman secured first place with a time of 8:52.24, followed by Chase Hejny of American Fork and Caleb Brown of Herriman. Corner Canyon claimed victory in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:26.38, while Herriman’s boys’ team dominated the 4x800 relay, finishing in 7:44.15.
Field events also produced notable outcomes, with Matthew Bryant of Lone Peak leading the shot put with a distance of 64 feet 8.25 inches and the discus with 176 feet 4.0 inches. Trevor Cox of Layton topped the javelin throw at 180 feet 5.0 inches, and Taylor Roberts of Lone Peak won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet 10.25 inches.
The girls’ 6A competition saw Lone Peak athletes dominate the distance events, with Maya Bybee winning the 3,200 metres in 10:44.99 and the team taking first in the 4x800 relay. Riverton won the 4x200 relay, and Lacee Pace of Westlake led the shot put. In the 5A division, Box Elder won the 4x200 relay, Viewmont triumphed in the 4x800 relay, and Cassidy Southam of Maple Mountain led the javelin throw.
The championship schedule concludes on Friday, which will feature the 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A divisions. The final day of competition will determine the state champions across all classifications, bringing the state track and field season to a close.
