Starc surpasses Kapil Dev as Bangladesh seize control in Darwin

Mitchell Starc has moved into 11th place on the all-time Test wicket-takers list, surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 with his 435th dismissal during the opening Test against Bangladesh in Darwin. The milestone, achieved on Day 2 when he removed wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das for a duck, also cements Starc’s status as the second-most successful Australian pace bowler in history, trailing only Glenn McGrath.

Despite Starc’s individual achievement, Australia faces a significant challenge after being bowled out for 198 on Day 1. Bangladesh has capitalised on favourable batting conditions at the Marrara Cricket Ground, establishing a 150-run lead by the close of play on Day 2. The visitors resumed their first innings after Australia’s early collapse and have maintained firm control of the contest.

Tanzid Hasan Tamim played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s dominance, scoring his maiden Test century in Australia. The 25-year-old made 101 off 188 balls, including eight fours and a six, before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon. Tamim’s innings followed a 102-run second-wicket partnership with Mominul Haque, who was dismissed for 49 by Josh Hazlewood.

Bangladesh continued to build their advantage after Tamid’s dismissal, reaching 348/6 at stumps. Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 29, while Hasan Mahmud finished the day not out on 13. The hosts now have considerable work to do to remain competitive in the series.

Starc’s milestone places him just five wickets short of South Africa’s Dale Steyn, who currently occupies 10th place with 439 wickets. Starc had already made history on the opening day in Darwin by becoming the most successful left-arm bowler in Test cricket, adding another layer to his growing legacy despite the team’s current difficulties.
