St Helens captain Jackson Hastings faces season-ending ban after violent conduct charge

St Helens captain Jackson Hastings has been handed a three-match ban for a Grade E violent conduct offence, a sanction that could effectively end his campaign if the club fails to qualify for the Super League play-offs. The disciplinary ruling follows an incident during Saturday’s 36-12 victory over Castleford Tigers, where Hastings was dismissed in the first half for punching the Tigers’ Tyler Dupree.
The dismissal proved costly for St Helens, who were reduced to 13 men for a significant portion of the match. Dupree was also sin-binned for the same incident, highlighting the physical nature of the confrontation. While the Saints retained their win, the loss of their leader at a critical stage of the season adds pressure to their remaining fixtures.
Castleford director of rugby Chris Chester offered a different perspective on the incident, suggesting that St Helens’ Scott Murrell had obstructed the line of sight. Chester told Sky Sports that Murrell “just jumped” in the way of Dupree and noted that “you can’t punch people in the face.” This comment provides context to the opposing club’s view of the offence, although no formal ruling on Murrell’s involvement has been detailed.
The ban’s impact on Hastings’ season is contingent on St Helens’ final league position. The Saints currently sit seventh in the standings with 28 points, one place outside the play-off positions with three games remaining. To keep Hastings on the field for the post-season, they must leapfrog one of the clubs above them.
The clubs currently occupying the play-off spots are Wakefield Trinity and Leigh Leopards, both on 32 points, and Hull KR on 30 points. If St Helens fail to overtake any of these teams in the final stretch, Hastings will have played his last match of the season. The race for the final play-off berth remains tight, with the outcome of the remaining fixtures determining the captain’s availability.
At the top of the table, the play-off race is already settled for several clubs. Current leaders Leeds Rhinos, along with Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves, have already secured their places in the post-season. Wigan are tied on 38 points with the Rhinos but sit behind them due to an inferior point differential, while Warrington are in third, two points behind the leaders.
