The San Antonio Spurs have taken a 3-2 series lead in the Western Conference semifinals of the NBA Playoffs, defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves 126-97 in Game 5 on Tuesday. The victory places the Spurs one win away from advancing to the Western Conference finals, with Game 6 scheduled for Friday in Minneapolis.
Victor Wembanyama returned to the court after being ejected from Game 4 for elbowing an opponent in the face, a penalty that resulted in an automatic ejection. Wembanyama scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, including 16 of the Spurs’ first 24 points as San Antonio built an early 24-9 lead. He recorded a double-double in the first half with 21 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the team’s physical start.
Keldon Johnson provided significant support off the bench with 21 points, while De’Aaron Fox contributed 18, Stephon Castle added 17, and Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper each scored 12. Harper also recorded 10 rebounds. The Spurs’ balanced offensive attack allowed them to maintain control despite Minnesota attempting to mount a comeback.
Minnesota tied the game at 61-61 early in the third quarter, but San Antonio scored 30 of the final 42 points in that period to take a 91-73 lead. Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 20 points, while Jaden McDaniels and Julius Randle had 17 points each. Ayo Dosunmu scored 16, and Naz Reid finished with 12.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Wembanyama’s maturity and the team’s defensive effort, noting the importance of discipline and execution. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch attributed the loss to defensive breakdowns and a lack of offensive structure in the final six minutes of the third quarter. If necessary, Game 7 would be held in San Antonio on Sunday.
