SportsLine model projects podium finish for George Russell at 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix
With Lando Norris holding pole position and Ferrari’s Kimi Antonelli leading the championship, the SportsLine model identifies George Russell and two longshots as significant contenders for the 11th race of the Formula One season.
The 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix marks the conclusion of the first half of the 22-race Formula One season, taking place on Sunday at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest. As the event celebrates its 90th anniversary since its inaugural race in 1936, the championship standings remain tight, with Ferrari driver Kimi Antonelli leading the table and Lewis Hamilton sitting in second place. Hamilton, an eight-time winner of this specific event, faces a competitive field as the season reaches its midpoint.
Lando Norris secured pole position for the race and currently sits as the favourite at FanDuel, with odds listed at +155. He is followed closely by Charles Leclerc at +230, Hamilton at +380, and Antonelli at +470. The odds board shows a significant drop-off after the top four, with the next closest competitor, Oscar Piastri, priced at +2200. The race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET on the 14-turn, 2.722-mile circuit.
A SportsLine predictive model, developed by data engineer Mike McClure, has released its projections for the weekend. The model, which simulates every race 10,000 times using track history and recent results, has correctly identified 35 Formula One winners since 2023. It also previously predicted Lando Norris’ victory at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix and has tracked 13 NASCAR winners since 2025.
The model has identified George Russell as a primary projection for the podium, offering odds of +100. Russell is currently third in the standings and is having a career year, having secured points in each of his last five visits to the Hungaroring. He achieved a top-three finish and the fastest lap at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, and has recorded two podiums in his last four trips to the track.
Prior to a retirement in Belgium caused by an opening-lap collision, Russell had achieved three consecutive top-two finishes, including a win in Austria. The model cites this recent form and historical performance at the circuit as key factors in projecting a top-three finish for the Mercedes driver.
In addition to Russell, the model has flagged two longshots as potential surgers: Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad, both priced at +30,000. While the model highlights these high-risk, high-reward options, it notes that historical accuracy does not guarantee future results. Odds are sourced from FanDuel and are subject to change.
