Spieth and Malnati Survive Cut at Wyndham Championship as Day’s Playoff Hopes End
Defending champion Cameron Young leads the field with a 66, while eight notable players, including Jason Day, miss the weekend cut at the 36-hole stage.
The 2026 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, delivered a decisive shift in the FedEx Cup landscape as the 36-hole cut line settled at 3-under 137. The event, serving as the final gateway to the playoffs, saw 81 golfers advance to the weekend, including defending champion Cameron Young, who overcame early putting struggles to post a 66. Young was joined by Matt Wallace and Tony Finau, who also advanced with rounds of 66.
Jordan Spieth secured his weekend berth through a tense finish, shooting an even-par 70. Despite failing to record a top 10 finish this season, Spieth remained safely positioned in the playoffs. His round concluded with a critical 24-foot par putt on the final hole, salvaging his score after a provisional tee shot and a recovery wedge shot from the trees.
Peter Malnati, ranked No. 171 in the FedEx Cup, staged a remarkable comeback to make the cut with a 71. Starting the day four shots over par through five holes, Malnati required a victory to reach the playoffs. He rallied with birdies on the final four holes, including a clutch 18-footer on the 18th. Malnati initially missed the hole as he threw his putter in the air, only to realise his ball had trickled in, a moment he described as a significant victory given his need for every available FedEx Cup point.
Keegan Bradley extended his streak of made cuts to nine, maintaining his position in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Bradley had previously enjoyed a streak of 15 straight playoff appearances, and his round featured three late birdies across a four-hole stretch to grind out his qualification.
Conversely, the cut eliminated eight notable players, ending the weekend hopes for several contenders. Jason Day’s playoff streak came to a halt with his miss. Mac Meissner, who entered the week at No. 71 in the FedEx Cup, missed the cut by one shot after making double bogey on the final hole. Meissner’s three-putt from 43 feet dropped him to 2 under, moving him from the right side of the cut line to the wrong side. Amateur Kihei Akina was among the 81 golfers who advanced, joining the professional field for the weekend competition.
