Former welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr has announced his retirement from professional boxing following a points defeat to Tim Tszyu in Sydney. The 36-year-old American lost the bout on scores of 118-110, 117-111, and 117-111, marking the end of a career that included reigns as WBA, WBC, and IBF champion.
Spence, who remained undefeated in 28 professional fights before a loss to Terence Crawford three years ago, stated he was grateful to leave the sport with his mental faculties intact. Describing himself as on the back foot throughout the contest against the Australian challenger, Spence confirmed the bout concluded his time in the ring.
"I thank God I'm gracious to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family still by my side," Spence said. He noted that his finances were secure and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to step away while still able to care for his family.
Tszyu, who sought a future world title shot, described the victory over the legend as topping a world title. The Australian fighter grew in confidence and power throughout the match, consistently targeting Spence’s chin to secure the unanimous decision.
"I'd love to fight for a title. That's what I'm aiming for," Tszyu said. "But I've got to say beating a great like Errol Spence tops a world title." He acknowledged the difficulty of facing a fighter of Spence’s stature, noting he had sleepless nights preparing for the bout.
Spence’s professional history includes winning his first world title in 2017 by defeating British fighter Kell Brook at Bramall Lane. His career spanned nearly a decade at the elite level, culminating in this final appearance in Sydney.
