Sparks put out Fire, snap three-game losing streak
Second-half intensity and rebounding dominance secure 89-72 victory, improving record to 5-6

The Los Angeles Sparks concluded a three-game losing streak with an 89-72 victory over the Portland Fire, marking a significant shift in momentum for the franchise. The win improved the Sparks’ season record to 5-6, while the Fire fell to 6-7. The outcome was determined by a disciplined second-half defensive performance that restricted the Fire to 29 points and forced 14 turnovers after the interval.

Head coach Lynne Roberts highlighted the team’s ability to correct early deficits, noting that the Fire had secured 11 offensive rebounds in the first half compared to just three in the second. This turnaround was attributed to the efforts of Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby, who combined for 29 rebounds. Ogwumike recorded 20 points and 17 rebounds, including six second-half offensive boards, while Hamby contributed 22 points and 12 rebounds, with six of those coming in the final two quarters.

Ogwumike described the fourth-quarter effort as a collective motivation to play for one another, emphasising that defensive rigidity was the primary driver of the victory. The Sparks held the Fire to a 36.1 per cent field goal percentage for the game. Kelsey Plum added 16 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half, providing the offensive balance required to maintain the lead.

The victory carries strategic weight regarding home-court advantage, a critical factor in WNBA playoff positioning. Ogwumike stressed the importance of maintaining focus in their iconic arena, contrasting the team’s stronger road record with their previous struggles at home. Prior to this match, the Sparks held a 2-5 home record, making the win essential for stabilising their domestic performance.

Looking ahead, the Sparks will embark on a three-game road trip, beginning with a match against the Seattle Storm. The team has historically performed better on the road, holding a 3-1 record in such scenarios. Roberts emphasised that the staff and players must collectively choose to replicate this level of effort consistently, ensuring that the defensive intensity shown against Portland becomes a standard rather than an exception.
