Spain manager defends Gavi’s intensity amid training controversy
The Spain coach insists players must give their all in preparation, dismissing calls for an apology after viral footage showed Gavi tackling Rodri.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has publicly defended Barcelona midfielder Gavi following the emergence of viral footage depicting a hard tackle on teammate Rodri during a training session. The incident, which appeared to show Gavi standing on Rodri’s foot and causing visible pain, sparked significant discussion on social media, prompting the manager to address the situation directly.
Speaking at a press conference, De la Fuente emphasised that the intensity displayed in training is a necessary component of football preparation. He stated that players are expected to give their all and that no apology was required for the contact. The manager affirmed his preference for Gavi’s competitive nature, noting, “I want this Gavi,” while acknowledging that the midfielder needs to manage his energy and pace himself more effectively.
Rodri was able to continue the session despite the incident, and De la Fuente confirmed that the atmosphere within the squad remains positive. The manager described the situation as typical football training, seeking to defuse any external criticism by framing the tackle as a standard expression of competitive drive rather than a disciplinary issue.
Beyond the immediate controversy, De la Fuente provided updates on squad planning for the upcoming friendly against Iraq. He confirmed that changes would be made to the lineup to provide playing time for players who did not feature in previous matches. While he indicated he has a plan for the World Cup starting lineup, he declined to reveal specific details before the Wednesday fixture, citing the unpredictable nature of football.
Regarding fitness concerns, the manager confirmed that forward Lamine Yamal remains injured and will not feature in the upcoming friendly. However, Yamal is expected to recover in time for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde on 15 June. Key forwards Nico Williams and Victor Munoz are also reported to be on track for availability for the tournament start in the United States.
