Spain manager backs Bernal for future despite World Cup exclusion
Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal made his senior international debut in a friendly against Iraq, earning praise from the Spain manager for his role in the team’s long-term plans.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has publicly endorsed Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal following the 19-year-old’s senior international debut in a friendly match against Iraq on Thursday. Although Bernal was not selected for Spain’s final World Cup 2026 squad, De la Fuente described him as a “very important player for the future,” citing his vision and suitability for the “number 6” position.
The fixture against Iraq functioned primarily as a conditioning exercise to help players adapt physically ahead of the tournament in the United States. De la Fuente confirmed that no injuries occurred during the match and noted that while there are areas for improvement, these are typical for young players. He specifically identified Bernal’s personality and tactical awareness as key assets for the national team’s long-term strategy.
“We aimed to focus more on conditioning and physical conditioning, to help the players adapt,” De la Fuente told reporters. “It was a day to assess their form and give other players a chance.” The manager emphasized that the team is now entering a more demanding phase, with the immediate focus shifting to the upcoming fixtures in North America.
Spain is scheduled to travel to the United States, where they will play a friendly against Peru before their first group stage match against Cape Verde. The manager confirmed that the team would be flying out the following day, marking a transition from preparation to the operational phase of the tournament.
While Bernal’s inclusion in the final squad was not realised, his performance in the training camp and the friendly has secured his place in De la Fuente’s future plans. The manager’s comments underscore a strategic approach to squad management, balancing immediate tournament needs with the development of emerging talent for subsequent cycles.
