Spain and Argentina set for World Cup final as New York hosts global convergence
Cultural ties and political recognition bolster Spain’s profile among diverse New York communities, while Argentina’s supporters gather in Times Square for the July 19 showdown.

With hours remaining before the 2026 World Cup final, France 24 International reporters took to the streets of New York to gauge supporter preference between Spain’s Lamine Yamal and Argentina’s Lionel Messi. The survey was conducted on the eve of the championship match between the two nations, scheduled for Sunday, 19 July 2026, in the New York and New Jersey area.
The event has drawn significant crowds to the city, with Argentinian supporters converging on Times Square ahead of the final. The logistical scale of the tournament has transformed the region, creating a focal point for international football fans just days before the decisive fixture.
Spain’s standing among Arab and West African communities in New York has been bolstered by a combination of cultural and political factors. Support has grown notably in Brooklyn’s Little Palestine, influenced by the Spanish government’s recognition of Palestinian statehood. Additionally, Yamal’s paternal ties to Morocco have resonated within these demographics.
West African support for the Spanish team is similarly buoyed by the heritage of its players. Yamal’s mother is from Equatorial Guinea, a connection that has strengthened the team's appeal within West African communities in the city. These cultural links have helped reshape local allegiances ahead of the final.
Prior to the final, England secured third place at the tournament with a 6-4 victory over France in Miami. Jude Bellingham scored the winning goal in the 90+8th minute, ending Didier Deschamps’ tenure as France manager. Earlier in the tournament, Lionel Messi broke the World Cup scoring record during Argentina’s group stage match against Austria.
The final match represents a distinct international tournament fixture, separate from domestic competitions such as the recent Sunderland-York City pre-season friendly. The outcome will determine the champion of the 2026 World Cup, with the match taking place in the New York and New Jersey area.
