SpaceX targets fourth-quarter 2027 launch for first AI satellites
Elon Musk has brought forward SpaceX’s orbital computing target, while the technology’s economics, regulatory path and ability to scale remain unproven.

SpaceX is targeting the fourth quarter of 2027 for the launch of its first artificial-intelligence satellites, according to a Bloomberg report carried by Yahoo Finance that cited a post by Elon Musk. The company reportedly aims to reach “significant scale” in 2028.
Musk said SpaceX, working with NVIDIA, had designed a space-optimised Vera Rubin NVL72 system for deployment in orbit. The satellites are expected to be powered exclusively by NVIDIA chips and serve as orbital data centres.
The reported schedule is earlier and more specific than SpaceX’s May IPO prospectus guidance, which referred to a launch “as early as 2028”. Musk had also said on an August earnings call that launches would begin “next year”.
SpaceX has reportedly agreed deals with Anthropic and Google to rent orbital computing capacity, according to comments by chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell to CNBC. The terms of those arrangements and the capacity commitments have not been disclosed.
The project still depends on a new satellite architecture, successful deployment and regulatory approval. SpaceX has proposed scaling its broader constellation to as many as 1 million satellites, while the costs of launching, powering, cooling, maintaining and replacing orbital computing hardware remain undisclosed.
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth has projected a potential orbital-compute build-out of roughly 75 gigawatts by the end of 2031. However, a successful demonstration would not by itself establish that the system can be scaled economically, and the proposed cost, density and weight advantages over terrestrial data centres remain unproven.
