SpaceX leases Colossus 1 computing capacity to Anthropic amid AI sector consolidation
The agreement resolves capacity constraints for Claude models while the US government pursues separate access deals with other major technology firms
SpaceX has entered into a strategic agreement to lease computing resources from its Colossus 1 data centre in Memphis, Tennessee, to Anthropic. Under the terms announced by the Al Jazeera Global News feed, the deal provides the artificial intelligence firm with access to more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and a power capacity of 300 megawatts. This infrastructure is set to come online within a month to address immediate capacity constraints affecting Anthropic's Claude Pro and Claude Max models.
The partnership represents a significant operational shift for the Memphis-based facility, which now holds sufficient power capacity to supply electricity to over 300,000 homes. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated that the decision to partner with Anthropic was influenced by the company's demonstrated commitment to AI safety. In a public statement, Musk noted that Anthropic's approach did not trigger his internal "evil detector," a sentiment that stands in stark contrast to his ongoing legal battle against OpenAI.
This commercial alignment occurs against a backdrop of divergent government strategies regarding artificial intelligence access. While Musk actively litigates against OpenAI, the United States administration is simultaneously seeking access to AI tools from other major technology firms. Notably, recent defence and federal access agreements involving the Department of Defense and the Trump administration have excluded Anthropic, despite the company's recent interest in collaborating with SpaceX on gigawatt-scale space-based orbital data centres.
Anthropic has leveraged the increased capacity to adjust its service parameters for subscribers. Following the announcement, the company revealed it is doubling rate limits for Claude Code on paid plans and removing peak-hour usage caps for Pro and Max accounts. These changes aim to alleviate service disruptions that have previously impacted developers relying on the platform's advanced capabilities.
Looking beyond terrestrial infrastructure, both entities have expressed interest in developing space-based orbital data centres capable of handling gigawatt-scale operations. Musk has identified this endeavour as a primary driver for SpaceX's impending initial public offering, though the company acknowledges the technical challenges and capital intensity required to realise such a project.
The agreement underscores the intensifying competition within the artificial intelligence sector, where private sector partnerships are increasingly shaping the availability of critical computing resources. As the industry moves toward greater consolidation, the exclusion of certain firms from federal contracts highlights the complex interplay between commercial strategy and national security policy in the digital age.
