South Carolina Football Confirms Sellers and Gibson Out for 2026 Season
Head coach Shane Beamer cites rehabilitation confidence as the Gamecocks navigate depth chart adjustments with incoming transfers and returning starters.
The South Carolina football program confirmed on 16 August that wide receivers Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson will miss the entire 2026 season due to injuries. The announcement marks a significant disruption to the team's offensive planning as the squad approaches the start of the new campaign.
Head coach Shane Beamer issued a statement addressing the situation, expressing disappointment at the loss of two key contributors. However, Beamer emphasised his confidence in the players' ability to recover, stating he believes both athletes will overcome the adversity they face. The coaching staff pledged to support them through the rehabilitation process moving forward.
Jayden Sellers, the younger brother of quarterback LaNorris Sellers, appeared in seven games during the previous season. He recorded 22 catches for 337 yards and one touchdown as a freshman. While Sellers was expected to assume a larger role this year, the specific nature of his injury has not been detailed in the programme's update.
Gibson, a 6-foot-5 transfer from Oklahoma, joined the Gamecocks on 4 January, marking Beamer’s first acquisition of the current transfer cycle. His career has been hampered by persistent injury issues. After recording 14 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns in 2023 at Oklahoma, Gibson suffered a patellar tendon injury in the summer of 2024. A subsequent setback prevented him from playing in 2025, leading to a redshirt year before he departed the Sooners.
Despite the absence of Sellers and Gibson, the programme indicated it is not in a state of panic regarding the depth chart. Returning wide receiver Nyck Harbor is set to lead the unit after topping the team in receiving yards and touchdowns last season. He is joined by Mazeo Bennett, who is looking to build on his previous performance.
The roster has been bolstered by new transfers Nitro Tuggle from Purdue and DJ Black from UCF. Tuggle recorded 500 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2025, while Black contributed 273 yards and two scores. Additional options on the depth chart include Donovan Murph and Sequel Patterson.
Preparation for the season has been somewhat opaque, with South Carolina’s first scrimmage on 15 August closed to media. Recent practices open to the press have not featured live action, limiting external visibility into how the coaching staff intends to rotate the remaining wide receivers.
