Sam Dekker will make an excellent assistant coach at South Carolina
Dekker joins head coach Lamont Paris’ staff after two seasons playing professionally in Spain

The University of South Carolina announced on 15 May 2026 that former NBA player Sam Dekker has been appointed as an assistant coach for the Gamecocks men’s basketball team. The confirmation was released via the program’s official social media channels, marking Dekker’s transition from professional athlete to collegiate coaching staff.

Dekker, a University of Wisconsin alum and first-round draft pick by the Houston Rockets, arrives at South Carolina to work under head coach Lamont Paris. The two previously served together during Dekker’s collegiate career at Wisconsin, where they competed in two NCAA Final Fours. Paris served as an assistant coach under Bo Ryan during that period.

Prior to this appointment, Dekker spent the preceding two seasons playing professionally in Spain. He saw limited action in the most recent season due to injuries. His professional career also included stints in Russia, Turkey, England, and the NBA.

In an official statement, Paris described Dekker as a “winner through and through” and highlighted his “unique experiences and skill set.” The head coach stated that Dekker’s background would allow him to have a “tremendous impact on our players and program immediately.”

Dekker responded to the appointment on social media, stating he was “beyond thrilled” and “beyond motivated.” He noted that joining Paris was a “dream opportunity” and expressed a goal to win in March while providing players with opportunities for success on and off the court.

The hiring is viewed as a strategic move for recruiting, particularly in Wisconsin. The state has recently produced high-level talent such as Tyler Herro, Tyrese Haliburton, and Kon Knueppel. Dekker’s roots in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where his father Todd was a longtime coach at Sheboygan Lutheran, may further strengthen these connections.

Dekker’s father, Todd Dekker, coached Sam at Sheboygan Lutheran, embedding coaching in his family history. Dekker has also spent time on social media analysing basketball intricacies, suggesting a long-standing interest in the tactical side of the game.

The Gamecocks compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Dekker’s transition marks the end of his playing career, which he described as providing experiences with “amazing players, coaches, and styles” across 11 years of professional play.
