Sotomayor running back Cameron Grady plays amid pending robbery charges
The UTSA-committed star made his season debut against Smithson Valley after a judge ordered the removal of his electronic tracking device.
Sotomayor senior running back Cameron Grady made his season debut for the Wildcats on Thursday night, playing while still facing two counts of aggravated robbery. The 17-year-old took the field at Farris Stadium against Smithson Valley, marking his first appearance of the season due to ongoing legal proceedings stemming from a July arrest.
Grady was booked into Bexar County Jail on 7 July and released two days later after posting a combined $100,000 bond. According to court documents, a judge granted a motion on Wednesday to remove an electronic tracking device, which had previously restricted his ability to participate in games. A separate motion allowing him to attend football practices and games was granted on 21 July.
Northside ISD executive director of athletics Conrad Hernandez confirmed that Thursday’s contest was the first game Grady could participate in this season. Hernandez also noted that Grady did not play in Sotomayor’s season opener against Clark the previous week. Despite the legal hurdles, Grady played through the fourth quarter before leaving the game with an apparent injury, though he was able to walk off the field on his own power.
The situation has drawn attention to Grady’s status as a committed recruit for the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Grady committed to the Roadrunners on 18 June, choosing UTSA over offers from San Diego State, Colorado State, and Texas State. However, under NCAA bylaws, college programs are prohibited from publicly commenting on verbal commits, leaving the university’s official stance unconfirmed.
Grady’s performance on the field has been notable in recent years. As a junior in 2024, he rushed for 895 yards and 12 touchdowns on 77 carries, although an injury limited him to five games. In 2023, he led Sotomayor in rushing with 1,435 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 119.6 rushing yards per game.
The aggravated robbery charges remain pending, with Grady charged but not yet convicted. The outcome of the Smithson Valley game was not explicitly detailed in the initial reports, but his participation highlights the complex intersection of local governance, legal procedure, and athletic eligibility in high school sports.
