Sony introduces PlayStation Pulse headsets with planar magnetic drivers
The Pulse and Pulse Edge support PlayStation Link and Bluetooth, while the Edge adds active noise cancellation and a detachable boom microphone.
Sony has introduced two new PlayStation wireless headsets, the Pulse and Pulse Edge, with planar magnetic drivers, integrated microphones and support for both PlayStation Link and Bluetooth.
Sony says PlayStation Link provides low-latency audio and allows users to switch between compatible PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC and Mac devices. Both headsets also feature what the company describes as AI-enhanced noise rejection for filtering background noise through their integrated microphones.
The Pulse Edge is the more feature-rich model. It has twice as many magnets as the Pulse, which Sony says enables deeper bass, and includes active noise cancellation and a detachable boom microphone for voice chat.
Sony also says both headsets make it easier to pinpoint directional audio cues, such as footsteps in first-person shooters. Those claims have not been independently tested.
Planar magnetic headphones use thin, flat diaphragms positioned between magnets and are associated with lower distortion and cleaner bass. Sony launched its first planar magnetic PlayStation headset, the Pulse Elite, in 2024 after acquiring Audeze, a brand known for the technology.
Sony has not announced pricing or purchase availability for either the Pulse or Pulse Edge.
