Social media age claims against Brighton’s Malick Yalcouyé challenged by youth club archives
ASEC Mimosas published photographs tracing the Ivorian player’s development after appearance-based speculation spread online.
Brighton footballer Malick Yalcouyé has been targeted by baseless social media claims that he is older than his stated age of 20, according to France 24 International.
The speculation followed Yalcouyé’s first goal for Brighton on 30 August. Posts on football pages questioned his age based on his appearance, prompting his former youth club, ASEC Mimosas, to publish archive photographs documenting his development from 2018 to 2023.
ASEC Mimosas said the photographs and the player’s documented progression should outweigh what it described as speculation and hostile debate. Ivorian football journalist Dobe Aboubacar also attributed Yalcouyé’s changing appearance to alopecia, although that claim has not been independently confirmed.
Similar allegations were made against 19-year-old Ivorian player Yan Diomandé, who was recently recruited by Real Madrid. One photograph said to date from 2013 showed Diomandé wearing a Chelsea shirt from the 2021–22 season, while another image showing him with pronounced wrinkles was identified by a tool as having been modified using artificial intelligence.
Questions over footballers’ ages have a documented history, including the 2024 case of Cameroon’s Nathan Douala, who was presented as 17 but reported by Le Monde to be at least 23. Cameroon subsequently announced measures to improve the verification of players’ personal details.
The available reporting does not cite an independent official age-verification record for Yalcouyé. Individual cases of falsification, however, do not establish that appearance-based accusations against African footballers are reliable.
