Socceroos star Volpato charged with speeding and cocaine possession following Sydney stop

Cristian Volpato, an Australian international footballer, has been formally charged with speeding and possessing cocaine following a traffic stop in Sydney. New South Wales Police allege the 22-year-old Socceroos player was travelling 50km/h over the designated speed limit when he was intercepted by officers on Anzac Bridge early on Friday morning.
During the roadside interaction, Volpato was subjected to a drug test which returned a positive result for cocaine. Police confirmed in a statement that the charges stem from these allegations, though the player has not yet been convicted in court. The legal process regarding the speeding and drug possession offences is now underway.
Volpato, who switched his international allegiance from Italy to Australia ahead of the 2026 World Cup, made three appearances for the national team during the tournament. Prior to his international career, Volpato developed through the youth ranks of Sydney United, Sydney FC, and Western Sydney Wanderers. His professional breakthrough occurred in 2020 when he was signed by Roma, followed by a move to Sassuolo in 2023 where he established himself as a Serie A player. His final appearance for Italy was at the under-21 level in 2025.
