Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal delivered a masterclass in control on Friday evening, striking out a season-high 12 batters to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park. The win comes as speculation regarding the MLB trade deadline intensifies, with the August 3 cutoff approaching and rumours of player movements remaining persistent.
Skubal, a left-handed ace, established his dominance early, striking out the first two batters of the game. By the end of the fifth inning, he had recorded nine strikeouts, demonstrating exceptional command by throwing 24 first-pitch strikes to the 28 batters he faced. His performance generated 25 swings and misses, 10 of which came on his changeup. The 12 strikeouts were one shy of his career-high for a regular-season start and two shy of his postseason best of 14.
The Tigers’ offense provided crucial support, particularly in the early innings. After Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres singled to load the bases, Riley Greene hit a deep fly ball to left field. Left fielder Isaac Collins timed his leap expertly at the fence, turning what appeared to be a grand slam into a sacrifice fly. Later, with two outs, Hao-Yu Lee singled to center, and Torres scored on a close play at home, beating the throw from center fielder Lane Thomas.
Skubal’s outing was not without blemish. His old nemesis, Salvador Perez, doubled into the right-center gap to lead off the fourth inning, eventually scoring on a Nick Loftin double. However, Skubal recovered to strand runners in the third and exited after 7.1 innings, having allowed just four hits and one run. He received thunderous ovations from the sold-out crowd of 40,638 spectators.
Kenley Jansen closed out the game, securing his 12th save of the season by retiring the final three batters, including a strikeout of Vinnie Pasquantino. The Tigers’ next scheduled start for Skubal, assuming the rotation order remains unchanged, is next Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park.
