The American League Cy Young Award race has narrowed significantly following the trade of Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, marking the first time since 2023 that a pitcher other than Skubal is projected to win the honour. With Skubal removed from the AL voting pool, the contest has consolidated into a two-man battle between Dylan Cease and Cam Schlittler, according to analysis from CBS Sports.
Cease currently leads the league in both versions of pitcher WAR and strikes out the most batters. He sits second in ERA, trailing the leader by just 0.02, and ranks sixth in WHIP. His workload of 126 ⅓ innings is viewed as sustainable, with no immediate concern of him being shut down before the season’s end. Cease has demonstrated increased effectiveness recently, posting a 0.84 ERA and 56 strikeouts across his last six starts.
Schlittler presents a compelling case as the primary challenger, leading the AL with a 2.26 ERA. He ranks second in WHIP and innings pitched, and third in strikeouts. Although he sits second to Cease in WAR metrics, the gap is narrow enough to keep him in contention. However, questions regarding his long-term durability persist, as his 139 ⅔ innings this season represent a significant increase from his previous career high.
Other contenders include Brayan Bello, Tanner Williams, and Mason Rasmussen. Bello holds a 14-2 record with a 2.78 ERA, though his lower ranking in WAR metrics is attributed to luck-based factors such as groundball percentage. Williams, who ranks second in strikeouts with 178, has been particularly effective in his last five starts, posting a 2.48 ERA. Rasmussen leads the league with a 0.93 WHIP and ranks fourth in fWAR.
